作者:TESOLinChina网址:http://www.TESOLinChina.com

Since concentration and attention spans are short and the young learners know few vocabularies, variety is must--variety of activity, variety of pace, variety of voice. Based on these features, TESOL Language games and various teaching methods are essential for teaching younger learners in Second Language Acquisition. The remarkable power of games to engage young learners’ attention is evident. Games are fun and fun is motivating.

TESOL   Language games can help learners to practice pronunciation, develop vocabulary, extend their repertoire of communication strategies and try to produce humor in the target language. For teachers and learners alike, games can bring light relief and a change of pace to classes. The following ideas may provide you with some starting points to help you to design your own games for learners.

Usually, TESOL language games which use cardboard boxes, picture cards and flashcards are very helpful to teach vocabularies. The games comes with clear instruction and the nature of competition and wanting to be better in students’ minds can be inspired by this. This kind of design can motivate students to listen to the teacher and process the leant content. When students concentrate on games, some sort of language interaction is taking place. It’s a boost for the acquisition of the target language.

Then, if we use puppets, paper dolls, toys in the language games, it would be more efficient and direct for the kids to perform dialogues and sketches. Also, they are very useful for teaching colors, body parts and clothes. They also help to connect the child’s world outside the classroom to what is happening inside the classroom.

Parent volunteers, assistants, and community businesses should not be overlooked as wonderful resources for pulling together materials to use in some of the games. Since there are no expensive or exotic materials used in our games, a look through the garage or a junk drawer may be all that is needed to bring some fun to a day at school. Students themselves are also eager to bring in things to be used in a game they enjoy to make it more personalized. An example of this is found in “Pick a Pet,” in which actual pet pictures can be included as game pieces. Even sets of game questions can be created by students for later use. This is a great help to the teacher, but also provides an extra opportunity for students to interact with significant subject matter before encountering it again in the game.

At last, Language games are extremely beneficial for natural approach. Some tools used in the langue games for visual presentation for students to watch, to touch and even to smell.

To summarize a little, when it comes to teaching young language learners, teachers should design the course and choose the right games based on learners’ knowledge and cognition level. And count in the types of their intelligence or learning modes. With the right language games, our goal of motivating and engaging students in our classroom would be easier to achieve.
